İGA Continues To Take High School Students To The Skies
The pre-selection process is completed for the second annual “Istanbul Inter-High School Model Airplane Competition” held by İGA-İstanbul New Airport. Students who qualified for the training program will design model airplanes which they will fly before the jury on May 14.
İGA, İstanbul New Airport contractor for construction and operation, completed the preliminary round of the second annual “Istanbul Inter-High School Model Airplane Competition” organized in collaboration with the Istanbul Provincial Directorate for National Education and Istanbul Technical University (ITU). At the program that received applications by 172 students from 30 schools across Istanbul, 46 candidates passed the preliminary round to qualify for receiving training. After taking three weeks of theoretical and five weeks of applied model airplane design classes by ITU academics, students will touch the skies with model airplanes of their own design in the final round.
At this project, İGA, contractor of the world’s largest airport built from scratch under one roof, one to put Turkey over the top of civil aviation, aims to encourage more young people to engage in aviation and to raise qualified workforce in this area. Yusuf Akçayoğlu, CEO of İGA Airports Construction, expressed their satisfaction at helping students with their career choices while giving them the chance to experience academic education as early as in high school, and he added: “At the program, which received over a hundred applications last year, 31 students, who completed the training program, worked in teams to design model airplanes. Sharing pleasure of the students as well as their excitement at working with academics, we realized once again how bright our future is with all these model airplanes that met with the skies. This year too sees increasing attention for the program. It is part of our mission to add value to the aviation sector and make this field rise in popularity in the eyes of young people of this country, set to become the center of civil aviation thanks to the Istanbul New Airport. We look forward to seeing the final round competition of the designs by shortlisted students who have been taking courses since March 25”.
On Saturday, April 8, İGA representatives met with students at a motivational breakfast meeting, also attended by Ömer Faruk Yelkenci, Istanbul Provincial Director for National Education; Serkan Gür, Deputy Istanbul Provincial Director for National Education; İbrahim Özkol, Deputy Rector of Istanbul Technical University, and academics of the Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty. Speaking at the event, Prof. İbrahim Özkol, Deputy Rector of ITU, congratulated students for their successful performance and expressed appreciation for taking part in such a special project alongside İGA.
Final round to be staged on May 14
46 finalists will attend trainings to be held at ITU Ayazağa Campus and will then design their model airplanes. Theoretical trainings will be provided by the ITU School of Aeronautics and Astronautics faculty members specialized in unmanned aerial vehicles. The program will proceed with complimentary group studies. These theoretical sessions will be concluded with an assessment exam. 20 students who prove successful at this exam will participate in a five-weekend applied training program that features step-by-step design and building of a model plane. At the final round of the competition, scheduled for May 14, shortlisted students will present their model airplanes before the judges, competing for the first prize. The first, second and third teams will be awarded technology store gift certificates of TL 6,000, TL 4,000 and TL 2,000, respectively. Moreover, all winners will have the opportunity to tour the İstanbul New Airport construction site, as well as a chance for an internship in the project.
